"Well... Because it's matriarchal, there's only two "noble" sons per House. Any son after the second would be offered up as sacrifice." Mauro gave a small shiver, thinking how close he was to being that third son. "Most of my kin are evil, though whether they're neutral evil or chaotic evil's up to you. Those who are higher up in power are wary of assassinations, for there's always bound to be someone lower aiming for that power."

Syntyche nearly choked on her coke when he said this. "One big happy family eh?" she said with nervous sarcasm. "It's weird, when I was little I thought that being noble would be all fun and games, clearly is harder than being a commoner in some respects."

"Oh yeah," Mauro replied with sarcasm. "As for being noble... you would think it would be easier. I've heard tales of how it's nothing more than schedules telling you where to go, when to eat, and how to sit. Though... that's mainly all colubuth nobility."

Syntyche made a disapproving noise. "I'd absolutely hate that kind of a life. I value my freedom over riches and status. How do you live in such a restricting society? Oh, no offense meant."

"One doesn't live a noble Drow male's life, one survives it. If and when we see a weaker foe, we strike them down. We see a House that has fallen out of Lloth's favor, we destroy the house, kill the noble family and take any and all surviving slaves and servants. On occasion, a House that destroys another may adopt children of the destroyed. But that's rare."

Syntyche nearly choked on her fish. She coughed a few times, eyes watering slightly. "That's brutal," she said once she stopped coughing. "I know almost nothing of your culture but.. those are your people, nothing good comes from killing your own kind, or anyone for that matter."

Mauro waited until Syntyche finished coughing. "It's a way of life for them." Mauro took a drink of his water. "They kill because it "culls the weak from the strong". So to speak."

"Talk about survival of the fittest." Syntyche said somewhat somberly, finishing her fries. "... May I ask how partners are decided? Is one allowed to choose or is there arranged marriages?"

"There are no set number of partners. It's usually the female that chooses." Mauro finished off his fries and washed it down with some water. "And there are no marriages whatsoever."

"That does make sense," Syntyche finally finished off her food and drink. "no offense, but it does seem that your people are somewhat emotionally detached."

"One must be when one must kill in order to survive and to rise up in rank. No matter where you stand within the family or where you House ranks." Mauro took another bite of his burger, chasing it down with water.

"To each his own I suppose..." Syntyche said, musing over Mauro's people.

"Indeed." Mauro took another bite of his burger and washed it down with some water. "There is an upside for living in the surface's underworld, if one knew where to look."

"Are you happy living that life?" Syntyche asked, fiddling with her napkin.

Mauro nodded. "I am. Though that life's not for everyone."
